Advanced Search is a Premium feature that lets you search for papers across Academia with more precision. You can search the full-text of millions of documents on the site, combine filters, and narrow results by topic, university, or position.
Do I need Premium to use Advanced Search?
Yes. Although Academia offers many free search options, Advanced Search is only included with Academia Premium.
If you’ve already tried using Academia’s free search options and you want to narrow down your broad results, you may want to upgrade to Academia Premium to carry out an Advanced Search.
How to start an Advanced Search
Click on the dropdown arrow inside the search box and click Start Advanced Search.
What you can search
- Search by keyword or phrase: Enter words or phrases into the "Keywords" box that you want to find in the full-text.
- Filter by research interest: Add multiple research interests to narrow your results.
- Filter by university or position: Find papers written by authors affiliation with specific institutions or roles. If you want to only see papers associated with Harvard University, or only by emeriti, this is the place to do it.
You can combine these filters to give yourself a more focused set of search results, or return results that will be more relevant.
For example, if you want papers that compare two philosophies, you could search for papers with the research interests utilitarianism and deontology instead of reviewing all papers related to either topic separately.
Search within your results
After you run an Advanced Search, Academia shows papers that match your search parameters. From there, you can search within the results or click Authors to view researchers connected to those papers.
Create a search alert
If you want to get new updates when we find things that match your search query, create a search alert!
Edit or clear your search
If your search doesn't provide the results you'd like, or you've finished searching for one specific topic, use Edit Search or Clear All next to your current search parameters. You can update the search or start a new one.
Find Papers (Full Text) from a basic search
You can also start a full-text search from the search bar, if you just want to look for keywords or phrases in the full-text of any document on Academia. Do a basic search and click the Papers (Full Text) tab on the search results page to search within paper text instead of only searching titles.
