If you've ever wanted to thank a scholar, pick their brain, or make a simple connection, you can do that by sending them a message! You can send private messages Academia.edu by clicking the "Message" button on the profile of the person you want to contact and read the messages you've received in your inbox. How do I reach out to another Academia.edu user?
Some Academia users include their email on their profile page. If they do not, you can still reach these users by sending them a private message on Academia.edu. You can do this by going to their profile and clicking the "Message" button.
How will I know when I get a message?
When you click your name in the top right-hand corner, you'll see a red dot next to "Messages", with the number of new messages indicated. Your notifications, which you can also see by clicking your name in the top right-hand corner, will also increment.
How do I check my message inbox?
Click on your name in the top right-hand corner, then select "My Messages."
- In the left-hand sidebar, you'll see a list of people who have messaged you, or who you've messaged. You can click their name to view your conversation, which contains all of your messages.

The message you're actively reading is indicated by a blue line across the left-hand side of the profile picture of the person you're talking to.

Unread messages will have a gray background on the left-hand sidebar. Once you view a message, the left-hand background on the sidebar will become white.
- You'll see a "New Message" indicator preceding any new messages you've received from that user. You'll also see a "New Message" bar in any messages you haven't read in that particular message thread.
How do I report another user from my message inbox?
To report a message or conversation from a specific user, click into their message from your message inbox, then click the flag icon at the top of the conversation.
How do I delete a conversation?
If you want to delete a conversation, you can click the trash can icon at the top of the conversation to delete it. This will irreversibly delete the entire conversation.
