Following other researchers helps you keep up with their work and activity on Academia.edu. When you follow someone, you can see updates like new uploads, bookmarks, and comments in your newsfeed and notifications. You can find the Follow button on the profile page of any researcher on Academia.
How to follow someone
- Go to the person’s profile that you want to follow.
- Click Follow.
- You're now following them!
If you're tired of seeing their updates, you can always unfollow them. We won't tell someone when you've unfollowed them.
How to unfollow someone
- Go to the person’s profile that you want to unfollow.
- Hover over Following.
- Click Unfollow.
- You're no longer following them.
You can also block this person if you don't want them to be able to see, follow, or message you on Academia. We won't tell them you blocked them. Learn how to block someone.
See all of your followers
You can view an entire list of your followers and other network suggestions on the "My Network" page and click Follow (or Unfollow) next to the names of any researchers here.
- Open your news feed by clicking the Home button in the navigation bar or visiting Academia.edu,
- Then click My Network to see:
- Your followers
- Who you're following
- Co-authors from papers on your profile
- Academia members suggested for you
- Your contacts (linked from Google or Facebook)
If you can’t follow someone
- Your account might be too new. Wait up to 1 hour and try again.
- You're following too many people. You can follow up to 2,000 people. If you’re at the limit, unfollow someone to follow a new person.
- You've hit the daily following limit. Try following more people the next day.

Yes, they will get a notification that you've started following them.
Does Academia send a notification when I've blocked someone?
No, Academia won't notify the person you've blocked or anyone for that matter.
Who can follow me?
Anyone can follow you on Academia if you have not blocked them.
