If you try to update the email address of your Academia account, we'll inform you if the email address has already been taken by another account by displaying an error message, “Email already in use”. In this article, we'll cover frequently asked questions like:
- Why is my email address already taken?
- How do I update my email address if it's already taken?
- Can I delete the account using my email address?
- Can I merge two Academia accounts?
Why is my email address already taken?
Your email address may already be associated with an existing Academia.edu account. This can happen if:
- You previously created an account and forgot about it
- You signed up using "Continue with Facebook" or "Continue with Google" which created a new account with your email
How do I update my email address if it's already taken?
If you're trying to change your email address and receive an "Email already in use" error, you'll need to first access the other account using that email address. Try resetting the password for that email, or logging in with Google if you connected your account that way.
Once you've accessed that account, you can either:
- Delete the duplicate account if you no longer need it
- Change the email address on the duplicate account to free up your preferred email
Can I delete the account using my email address?
Yes, once you've gained access to the account associated with your email address, you can delete it from your account settings. This will free up the email address so you can use it with your primary account.
If you're unable to access the account, please submit a support request and include the email address in question.
Can I merge two Academia accounts?
No; we do not offer a feature for merging accounts at this time. See what you can do if you have two accounts.
