Citations are confident references to your works Academia has discovered. Unlike Mentions, they typically include bibliographic details that help identify a paper you authored. When you add papers to Academia with complete bibliographies, this increases Academia’s ability to find citations of your work.
How Citations differ from Mentions
- Citations are high-confidence matches to your work.
- Mentions are broader matches to your name or name variants. They may refer to you, someone with a similar name, or something other than a citation of your research. Because these often don’t include bibliographic data, they require your review.
View your Citations dashboard
Click Citations in the navigation bar at the top-right of the page to see your citations and mentions.
On some versions of the site, you may still see a Mentions button in the navigation bar. You can click Mentions instead to view your Citations dashboard.
What you’ll see
- If Academia has found citations: you’ll see a Citations tab with a badge indicating the number of citations we found. We’ll also notify you when we find more!
- If Academia hasn’t found citations yet: you won’t see a number next to your Citations, and the dashboard will be empty. You may still have Mentions to review, though!
Improve how Academia finds citations of your work
If you’re worried citations are missing, or that your number is too low, this usually means Academia simply hasn’t discovered or confidently matched a citation to your work yet. As Academia continuously scans academic databases on the web, more citations may appear over time.
We may be able to find more citations when you:
- Upload more of your authored works.
- Check the publication details on papers you’ve already uploaded.
- Add DOIs to your papers where possible.
- Update the bibliographic information for your papers.
Missing citations can’t be added manually.
Why don’t I have any citations?
No citations found yet doesn’t mean your work has never been cited. You may have Mentions pending review, or we don’t have enough information about you to determine we’ve found your works yet. Make sure your papers are up-to-date. Over time, Academia may find them.
What if a citation isn’t mine?
Select This is not me on the incorrect citation.
How do I change my name variants?
If you want to remove specific variants of your name from our Mentions search, contact our Support team to change your name variants. In your request, please specify the variants which you've used to publish your works and which variants you would like us to stop searching for.
