Why was my payment declined?
For security purposes, payment failures aren't fully disclosed to Academia. We recommend reviewing the most common reasons why payments are declined and our suggestions.
Common reasons for declined payments
Below you'll find the most common reasons a payment might fail and what you can do to check and resolve them. If you've tried the solutions suggested below or they don't apply to your specific situation, contact your bank or financial institution for more details about the decline.
Incorrect card information
The card number, expiration date, security code (CVV), or billing address is entered incorrectly.
If your card information is correct:
- Confirm your billing ZIP/postal code matches what your bank has on file.
- Remove any extra spaces in the card number/name fields (if applicable).
Insufficient funds
There is not enough money in the account to cover the transaction.
Check your bank account balance to make sure your account has the necessary funds to cover your payment. Pending transactions may affect the total amount of usable funds available.
Expired card
The card has passed its expiration date.
Your card issuer or bank may have issued you a new card. Enter in your new card details.
Fraud prevention
The bank or card issuer has blocked the transaction because it looks suspicious or unusual.
Contact your bank or financial institution. Your financial institution can disclose the reason why your payment was declined and how to resolve the issue.
If it looks like the charge went through
Pending charges temporarily appear on your statement and may look like a final charge, but they eventually disappear. You may still need to authorize the transaction, or contact your bank to see why it's pending.
