Yes. You can read and download individual papers on Academia for free. You need an Academia account to download a paper, but you don’t need Academia Premium.
How to download a paper for free
- Open the paper on Academia.
- Click the PDF only tab.
- Click the blue Download PDF button on the paper information card.
- If you see an offer for Full PDF Pack for $1, choose No thanks, I’ll stay on the free tier, Just this PDF, or similar wording.
- Follow the prompts to download the individual paper.
Why is the downloaded paper incomplete?
Authors sometimes upload only part of a document, such as:
- A cover page
- A table of contents
- An excerpt
- A paper preview
Academia can only provide the version the author uploaded. Upgrading to Academia Premium won’t unlock missing pages. You can contact the author or uploader to ask whether they can share the full, complete document.
Why am I being asked to pay?
You may see a payment option for one of these reasons:
You see an offer to purchase a PDF Pack
A PDF Pack is a Premium feature that downloads a collection of related papers. You should always be able to decline our Academia Premium offers and download an individual paper for free.
You followed a link to another website
You have left Academia and are being asked to pay for a paper on a non-Academia website. Links inside an uploaded paper may take you away from Academia. Another website may charge for access.
Check the address in your browser before paying. Academia paper-page addresses begin with academia.edu.
Academia is not liable or able to provide refunds for any payments made on any non-Academia websites. Be careful to check the website URL of the page you're on! All Academia paper pages will start with Academia.edu.
