This article covers how to delete a paper from your Academia account and profile page.
⚠️ Warning: Deleting a paper is permanent, irreversible, and includes any citation and analytical details of this paper. You cannot undo this action.
- Deleted papers are purged from our servers immediately after deletion.
- All previously available analytics for this paper will also be deleted.
- Papers cannot be recovered by anyone in any manner following deletion, including Academia.edu staff.
- If you only want to delete the file attached to the paper (but keep the paper listing and analytics), see how to add, edit, and delete attachments.
- Any links to your paper will no longer work, and the paper will be removed from all co-authors’ profiles.
How to delete a paper
- Go to your profile.
- Click Edit under the paper you'd like to delete to remove this paper from the site.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the paper editing page.
- Click Delete.
- We'll show you a confirmation window confirming you'd like to delete this document.
- To delete this paper, click "I want to delete this paper and all of its data and analytics."
Frequently asked questions
Why can't I edit or delete a paper?
You might not be logged in to this profile.
If you do not see "Edit" under the paper you want to delete, you might not be logged into the profile that uploaded it. Make sure you’re logged in to the right Academia.edu account.
You can only delete a paper you've uploaded.
If you’re a co-author but not the original uploader, you can’t delete the paper. Contact the original uploader to delete the paper.
You can only edit a paper’s co-authors if you’re listed as a co-author on that paper.
To request a takedown, contact us and include the link to the paper on Academia.
Will I still see analytical data about my paper?
Deleting a paper will delete all of the analytics related to that paper.
