Your affiliation helps other researchers understand your background and helps your profile show up in department and institution listings. It's a key part of your profile and should be as accurate and comprehensive as you feel comfortable making.
When added, your primary (main) affiliation will always appear at the top of your profile page. You can edit your primary affiliation at any time.
Add or edit your affiliation
When you first join Academia, we issue you the status of independent researcher. You can follow these steps to add your affiliation to be updated from your independent status, or edit your affiliations.
To add an affiliation to your profile
- Go to your profile page.
- Click Edit profile.
- In the Affiliation section, start typing the name of your university or organization, and click it when it appears. Read what to do if you can't find your university or department.
- Next, begin entering your department name. See other options if you don't have a department.
- If your department does not appear, select Create New.
- Type the full department name. Be sure to use the correct spelling and capitalization.
- After you enter it, select the new department to add it to your affiliation.
- Select your position from the dropdown. If you don't see your position, select Other to enter a custom position.
- Click + Add affiliation to include more affiliations on your profile.
- Click Save Edits when you're done!
To edit an affiliation on your profile
Only your primary affiliation is editable. Go to your profile page and click Edit profile to update your primary affiliation, then scroll down to the Affiliations section.
You can also delete an affiliation. Deleting all of your affiliations will return you to your independent researcher status.
If you can't find your university or department
Try a few variations of the name. If you belong to a university that has names in multiple languages, try both the local-language name and the English name. For example, if you belong to an Italian university, try typing both the Italian name and the English name.
We can also help you add a new university or organization.
After you've added an affiliation
Here's a brief summary of what to expect after you've added an affiliation:
- Your affiliation will appear on your profile page, with your primary (main) affiliation always appearing at the top.
- Most profiles show up to two affiliations at a time. If you have more, you will see See More.
- Click See More to expand the affiliations section and view all affiliations.
- Your profile URL will change when you edit your primary affiliation.
- Your profile will appear in the department listings your university's affiliation page.
- Affiliation information on your profile is public. Only add details you feel comfortable sharing.
