How do I check to see if an email is already in use?
Step 1: If you do not remember creating an account, you can try entering your email address into the reset password field. (This quick guide will show you how.) The reset password form will email you a link to access the account settings for the account associated with that email.
If you've accidentally created a second account, this quick article explains more on the topic of merging accounts.) If the password reset link sends you back to the login screen, you may have signed up with connecting with Facebook or Connecting with Google+, and should try clicking "Log in" and then "Log in with Facebook" or "Log in with Google."
It is a common mistake to accidentally create an account by clicking "Connect with Google" or "Connect with Facebook" rather than "Log in with Google" or "Log in with Facebook". When you connect with Google or Facebook, you create a new Academia.edu account with your Google or Facebook email address.
Step 2: When you click "Log In with Facebook", you should log in directly to your Academia.edu account.
Step 3: Try Step 2 again, this time by clicking "Log In with Google". Once again, if you are not automatically logged in, then you do not have a Google-connected account.
Step 4: If none of the steps above result in the discovery of an unknown second account, please submit a support request through our email form. Be sure to include the email addresses you tried to log in with in your message.
